Beatrice is named after Beatrice Shilling - one of the first women to study Electrical Engineering in Manchester in 1929. Beatrice Shilling went on to invent the restrictor orifice which permitted World War II Spitfire and Hurricane pilots to perform nosedives without their engines cutting out and crashing the plane. Her invention is thought to have saved many lives and contributed greatly to the outcome of the war.
